Spring Term 1 News Letter
Happy New Year!

Here we are in 2007 already, I hope you all had a fantastic holiday.
We had a brilliant end to the year with our parties and fantastic Christmas Production which, if you were lucky enough to come and see, I am sure you will agree was amazing. Well done to everyone involved.
We are now twinned with another school in Nigeria. My trip was very interesting and I met some hard working teachers and pupils.
We have a busy year ahead with plenty of trips and visits planned.
Our healthy eating initiative has proved extremely successful with children choosing fruit and other healthy options for lunch. Most children now bring a very healthy lunchbox.

Language Team

Mrs Jeet, Mrs Nuttall and Mrs Basnett will be starting parent classes again on Thursday and Friday afternoons between 2pm and 3pm. Our aim is to help you support your child in Numeracy, Literacy and Reading. One of the groups will be for parents wanting to develop their own English language speaking skills. Please come along and join us!

Support is continuing with reading in Year 3 and with newly arrived children in other year groups. If your child brings a reading book home please take time to sit and share the book with them. This will develop their enjoyment of books and deepen their understanding of the written word. Any help required don't hesitate to come along and talk to us.
Year 6 learn about Luddites

This term Year 6 pupils will be getting out their magnifying glasses and using their investigative skills to solve the murder of William Horsfall. Many of you will know William Horsfall Street but who is it named after? Why was he murdered? To find out more we will be taking the children back over 200 years ago to when Huddersfield was famous for the manufacture of woollen cloth. Over the weeks ask your children what they have learnt about Luddites.
Y5 Singled out for being fantastic on school trips

At the end of November Year 5 enjoyed a very successful visit to Oakwell Hall at Birstall. The aim of the visit was to support our history work about the Tudors. Our day at Oakwell certainly achieved this. We had a guided tour of the Hall itself, were able to investigate Tudor artefacts, play with Tudor toys and dress up in Tudor costumes. The children were complimented by Oakwell staff for their enthusiasm, knowledge and behaviour. Shortly before the end of term Year 5 was awarded a certificate by Oakwell Hall staff for being the most impressive school visitors during 2006!

We also had a very informative visit by the Fire Service. The children were reminded of the rules for fire safety and were very impressed with all the gear a fire fighter has to wear.
Year 4 Improve Their Homework

Year 4 have had a wonderful term back and have done lots of exciting things, including a very successful visit to the Thackray Medical Museum and football training by Huddersfield Town Coaches.
We are looking forward to another great term in the New Year, when we will be learning about the Victorians. Children will have a homework project to complete over the half term and will be collecting information each week from school to help.
Homework return has been much improved and most children are now bringing it in every week. It is linked to the work children have been doing in class and is there to help. Homework is given out on a Friday each week and is due back into school the following Friday for marking in class. Please could you sign the bottom of the homework sheet?

Thank you. Miss Virr, Miss Barlow, Mrs Shaw, Mrs Rasool
Year 3 Learn about Vikings

Happy New Year from us all, we had a fantastic trip to Eureka last term everyone enjoyed it.
The children produced some really fabulous work from our Science topic on Materials.

Our Main topic this term is history. We are learning about The Vikings a project sheet will be given out shortly.
We will be having a visit from a group who will be re-enacting Viking ways of life including crafts, combat, games, food and clothes. More information to follow.
Anti Bullying Week

We had a great week with lots of activities going on around school. Some of our children visited the Galpharm Stadium for the children's day, we even joined celebrities in leaving our handprints as part of Kingfisher windows' "Hands up against bullying" There was also a special conference with some professional footballers and rugby players in the "kick racism out of football" section. Our year group sports activity day went really well especially as the classes were mixed up and children were working without their friends most of the time. Blue day raised £90 towards school funds, thank you to all those children who left their uniforms at home for the day. We hope you saw the brilliant banners that we made on the Friday, as a lot of hard work (and a little interclass rivalry!) went into them. It's important to remember that in our school every week is anti bullying week and we work continuously to try to stamp out bullying.
